Peter Buck played Danelectro 12s in R.E.M., and Ira Kaplan occasionally plays one in Yo La Tengo (a band that loves Danelectro so much they named an EP after it). Given the extra hardware involved, 12-strings can get into expensive territory. Though the electric guitar may not be as conspicuous in popular music as it was when rock ruled the charts, it’s still everywhere: providing lilting chords for Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars, or haunting arpeggios for Polo G and Lil Baby.
